My experiences over the last several years have seen me moving from living in a developing country performing public-health work in a foreign language to developing Bitcoin trading algorithms for my master’s project. I mention this because I hope it shows two things. The first is my breadth of interest, including public health, mathematics, Machine Learning/Artificial Intelligence, finance, and more. The second is my ability to adapt and learn quickly. Though I arrived in Mozambique as a Peace Corps Volunteer without any Portuguese, through consistent, devoted practice, I learned a new language to an advanced degree and used it to perform my work. This was, until recently, my most difficult intellectual endeavor.After returning to the states and beginning my master’s degree in statistics, I continued this work with a statistical analysis of the UNICEF’s State of the World’s Children 2019 dataset in R, focusing on HIV/AIDS and women’s empowerment, two foci of my work in the Peace Corps. For this, I was awarded an Honorable Mention in the Policy category in the 2021 Data to Policy competition at the University of Colorado, Denver.In addition to learning R in graduate school, my interests in Machine Learning/Artificial Intelligence required that I pick up Python. With Python, my personal exploration of financial modeling and algorithmic trading led me to my master’s project, "A Survey of Deep Learning Architectures for Algorithmic Cryptocurrency Trading". In this project, I compared several time-series, classification, neural network, and reinforcement learning architectures to Bitcoin trading. Impressed with my work ethic and dedication to self-learning, my supervisor nominated me for CLAS Outstanding MS Graduate. Beyond these two achievements, my proudest thus far in my career, I would also like to highlight other work/projects and their results. My participation with mHealth, a data/AI-focused group out of the University of Colorado Anschutz medical campus, has led to a recent paper, ""An artificially intelligent, natural language processing chatbot designed to promote COVID-19 vaccination: A proof-of-concept pilot study". Further, my analysis with the "Aging Wisely Project" is being integrated into a book for publishing. Now, I am a Data Scientist at the University of Colorado Anschutz Department of Ophthalmology working on diverse projects in Deep Learning, image analysis, and statistics.
