About Jonathan Clarke

Entrepreneur since 2010. I'm an English-French bi-national / bi-lingual, based in France. I'm currently working on three main activities:- The devops REX conference in Paris, France. This event brings together 1000 people and is dedicated to high quality, real-world feedback talks only, about the cultural and organisational aspects of devops. We put a special focus on reducing our environmental impact.- The FAB project in Dordogne, France, that includes a brewery, recycled arts and crafts, and two holiday homes (gîtes). FAB is founded on the core principles of offering hand made, local products with the smallest possible environmental impact.- Rudder, open source software for Continuous Configuration. The solution brings automation and compliance to IT infrastructure without requiring rock-star sysadmins/developers to write complex code. Adopted by large, worldwide companies in industry, banking and administrations, Rudder is recognised as a strong challenger in the industry.My other interests, passions, enthusiasms and curiosities lie in devops, Libre / Open Source software (FLOSS), event management, brewing and tasting real ale (traditional British beer), home automation and eco-friendly travel (by train, boat, bicycle, on foot...)I'm not looking for a new position, and I won't respond to job offers to be a Java developer, thank you very much. I would however be interested in chatting about any of the topics above!

    From 2014, the company focused on Rudder's market fit and development, working hand in hand with our first customers.While acting as CEO, I also drove the company's growth with hands-on management roles according to the focus needed at the time: R&D, product, professional services, sales, marketing, events... While also giving talks at many events across Europe.In 2016, I launched a new branch of the business around events, to produce the devops REX conference, that became the main devops event in France, bringing together 1000 attendees and over 30 sponsors.In late 2019, the company's growth brought new challenges to face so, to focus on cybersecurity and HR development, I handed over to our new CEO, Alexandre Brianceau, who I hired in 2017 with this transition in mind. I continue to advise the RUDDER management team on company strategy and long-term goals as a board member, and continue to support the company as CFO.

    In 2010, I co-founded Normation, a company that lead to develop Rudder, a professional, open source, multi-platform solution for automating configurations of mission-critical IT systems. Based on the Continuous Configuration concept, Rudder embodies the fusion of configuration management and continuous auditing.We chose to bootstrap the company by running a small consulting business alongside, both to provide the financial resources to get off the ground and to stay in touch with what was going on in the field. I developed this consulting business, successfully generating over 1 M€ in revenue, while taking our customers' pain points back to my role as Product Owner in order to drive the product vision that lead to Rudder.

This included extensive use of continuous integration, version control best practices and some methods of 'agile' development.Industrialization was improved with pre-configurable software packaging for fully automated installs (for Debian systems, via debconf and LDAP).• LDAP & Identity Management:For customers and internal projects, I studied identity availability requirements, and designed LDAP directory specifications (DIT, ACL and schemas), proofed using OpenLDAP.Projects included a strong focus on integration, including synchronization with existing repositories (databases, directories and flat files) and transparent SSO using Kerberos.
