My professional path has provided me the opportunity to observe and STEM education from multiple perspectives. As a middle school mathematics teacher in the early to mid 1990s, I was responsible for designing and facilitating mathematics instruction and experiences for middle school students. As a graduate student at Emory University, I shifted my work to supporting mathematics teachers as they managed the challenges of their classrooms during the rise of accountability, standardized testing, and No Child Left Behind. My work with Project GRAD was extremely rewarding and illuminating in that my team supported mathematics instructional programs in multiple states and wide ranging contexts. My current role at the University of Maryland has provided me the opportunity to prepare mathematics teachers for today's classrooms, support and advise graduate students, work closely with local school districts, and manage multiple federally funded grants and programs.I have contracted with many organizations in a consulting capacity including the United Negro College Fund, Discovery Education, Horizon Research, Inc., and Ann Arbor Public Schools. The focus of the majority of my consulting work is K - 12 STEM program evaluation, curriculum evaluation, and assessment evaluation.
