I am currently President of Seely Management Consulting, Inc., and have over 40 years of experience in forestry, natural resource management, and organizational administration. My consulting practice and expertise focuses on natural resource policy and organizational management. The company was created in 2010 following my retirement from the Oregon Department of Forestry (ODF) as the Associate State Forester, after 35 years of public service. I am also the Past President of the Society of American Foresters, the national scientific and educational organization representing the forestry profession in the United States. I am currently serving as Co-Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Forest History Society.In addition, I am also an adjunct instructor at the University of Florida, School of Forest, Fisheries, & Geomatics Sciences. I am currently teaching the Managing Public Lands and Waters online course, a graduate-level course in the UF SFFGS Natural Resource Policy and Administration distance education Master’s Program.My personal philosophy is one of servant leadership and my organizational philosophy is that solid planning combined with effective performance produces desired results.

The SAF is the national scientific and educational organization representing the forestry profession in the United States. Founded in 1900 by Gifford Pinchot and six other foresters, it is the largest professional society for foresters in the world, representing approximately 12,000 foresters and other natural resource professionals. Members include natural resource professionals in public and private settings, practitioners, researchers, administrators, educators, and students.As President, I served as Chairman of the Board of Directors, and along with three other officers, eleven district directors, and the CEO, provided governance and leadership to the national organization, serving members and growing the profession. I also chaired the Executive Committee, and served ex-officio on all other Board committees. In succession, I served as Immediate Past President in 2017, assisting with transition and continued Board governance and leadership.As Past President, beginning in 2018, I've served as a member of the National Board of Directors Nominating Committee and served as the Chair of the National Leadership Development Committee, a diverse set of SAF members and staff who are focused on the needs of SAF volunteer leaders and providing recommendations on how best to meet those needs and improve SAF volunteer leadership through training, development and best practices and systems. -

The purpose of this course is to provide students with meaningful exposure to the managing of public lands and waters so that the value, importance, and significance of these resources to constituents and society-at-large is learned and understood. This is the first course of its kind at the UF School of Forest, Fisheries, & Geomatics Sciences. In the Spring semester, I support and co-teach FOR6934, Human and Organizational Management in Natural Resources, also an asynchronous online course at the graduate level.My responsibilities include course planning and development; creating and setting up course content, lesson flow, materials and assessment methodology; maintaining open communications with course students; providing meaningful feedback to students; and evaluating and grading assignments.

Associate State ForesterOregon Department Of Forestry 2004 - 2009Salem, OregonDuring my ODF career, I worked in all programs and operating areas of the agency, from a field forester working with non-industrial forest landowners to the agency’s second-in-command as Associate State Forester. I have excellent knowledge and understanding of forestry and forest landowner issues and needs. During my career, I served as either executive sponsor or senior project leader on numerous organizational management, leadership development, business process improvement and technology systems development projects.Regarding the Associate State Forester position, as a member of the Department of Forestry’s Executive Team, I provided executive leadership and management in two capacities – as the second-in-command to the State Forester for ODF (the Deputy role), and as the Administrative Services Division Chief, responsible for the leadership and management oversight of the Department’s human, financial, information and capital assets within a framework of internal business services and risk management (see below for further detail). Also served as the ODF representative as a member of the Western Forestry Leadership Coalition, the Council of Western State Foresters, the Western Forestry and Conservation Association, and the State of Oregon Interoperability Executive Council.
