Claudia is an experienced journalist and fluent Spanish speaker based in Southern California. She writes regularly on a range of health-related topics including maternal and child health, access to mental health care, intimate partner violence, people with disabilities, environmental health, immigrant and communities of color, homelessness, language access and health policy. Her stories have resulted in legislative and policy changes and won dozens of awards. In addition to serving as senior reporter and assistant editor for the California Health Report, Claudia has written stories for multiple California and national publications. Her work has appeared in the Los Angeles Times, the Orange County Register, The Mercury News, California Healthline, the Sacramento Bee, the San Diego Union Tribune, BabyCenter.com, Mother Jones, High Country News and many others. Claudia's stories have garnered many awards including the Institute for Nonprofit News’ Breaking Barriers Award 2022, the LION Publisher’s Investigative Report of the Year 2020, and California News Publishers Association 2022 Public Service Journalism award. Claudia is a 2017 and 2015 USC Annenberg California Health Journalism fellow and a 2006 Inter American Press Association fellow.
