In a project financed by the German Federal Environment Agency (Umweltbundesamt, UBA), I am responsible both for the project management (planning and coordination of experiments, organisation of meetings, writing reports and manuscripts) and the conducting of experiments, using molecular biology and microbiology methods (e.g. cultivation and detection of E. coli and Legionella species, plaques tests, DNA extraction, qualitative PCR, quantitative/ Taqman PCR, cloning & sequencing, T-RFLP, phylogenetic analysis using bioinformatics software).

Main topics of this seminar were the basics of Biotech/Pharma management (Pharmaceutical law - AMG, framework of public health / design and realisation of clinical studies (Monitoring, ICH-GCP) / regulatory affairs / QM & QS (GLP, GMP)), basic economics (project management / basics of business economics / marketing) and personality training (self- and time management / rhetoric and presentational skills / leadership skills and training).

After successfully finishing my phd thesis I started working as a postdoc on a project initiated and financed by the German Federal Environmental Agency (“Umweltbundesamt”, UBA) providing me with the opportunity to connect ecological research with health and industrial interests. Aim of the project was the development of a first concept for an ecological assessment scheme for groundwater ecosystems, looking for an easy and fast possibility to assess the current and secure the future quality of groundwater.During the project I acquired further experience in using of molecular biology methods such as DNA extraction, qualitative/quantitative PCR, Taqman PCR, cloning, sequencing, T-RFLP and phylogenetic sequence analysis.Besides being responsible for generating the data, my responsibilities also were independent planning and performing of lab experiments and sampling campaigns, supervising the doctoral students involved. In addition I presented my work on national and international meetings and wrote and co-wrote scientific publications.

Aiming to reach higher and to learn more about ecology, I started my Ph.D. thesis in April 2005 at the Institute of Groundwater Ecology at the Helmholtz Centre Munich. During my dissertation (“Autotrophy in Groundwater Ecosystems”), I focused on the detection of CO2 fixation potential and actual autotrophic activity of the bacterial communities in different groundwater ecosystems, applying various molecular biology and microbiology methods (e.g. enrichment cultures, detection of functional marker genes, FISH, FISH-MAR).

After successfully finishing my biology studies at the Ludwig-Maximilians University Munich in November 2004 I started working as research assistant in the department of Cytogenetics at the Ludwig-Maximilians University Munich.
