Claudia Rast is a shareholder based in Butzel’s Ann Arbor, Michigan office. With over thirty years focused on emerging technologies and their impacts on business and the law, she brings seasoned and practical solutions to clients seeking her technology skills in cybersecurity, technology negotiation, and privacy & data protection. She has worked with FBI offices across the country to assist clients in their recovery from data breaches. Recent successes including clawing back over $1M from a wire fraud hacker with the assistance of the FBI's recovery asset team. Other projects include updating online privacy and cookie polices to stay current with the increasing number of state laws addressing consumer privacy. Her technology background also informs her work in licensing innovative technologies, protecting ownership rights in these technologies, and assessing the legal issues arising with generative AI.In addition to her legal practice, she is a frequent author on issues of cybersecurity, privacy, and data protection. Rast has been a longtime member of the American Bar Association’s Section of Environment, Energy, and Resources, and was Chair of that Section in 2008-2009. In August 2020, Rast received an ABA Presidential appointment to a three-year term to co-chair the ABA’s Cybersecurity Legal Task Force—a task force on which she has served both as a liaison member and member-at-large since 2013. As part of that Task Force, Rast co-authored chapters in the ABA’s Cybersecurity Handbook (2nd ed. 2018), and (3rd ed. 2022) (writing on best practices for incident response) and was a contributing author to the Vendor Cybersecurity Checklist, 2nd Edition, published in May 2021.
