I coordinate a research laboratory which covers a broad range of topics unified by one theme: protein misfolding in human disease. Neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and many metabolic disorders are examples of pathologies caused by defective protein folding or aggregation. Through biochemistry, biophysics and molecular and cellualr biology approaches we investigate mechanisms of protein misfolding, aggregation and formation of amyloids, in connection to physiopathological conditions. Specifically, we are investigating processes related to the biological regulation of amyloid formation in Alzheimer's, Tauopathies and in mitochondrial diseases. The laboratory pursues an integrated experimental approach, from studies in molecules to cells to organisms, to investigate the mechanisms and the molecular basis of disease with high societal impact, such as Alzheimer's . Our research laboratory is part of BioISI, Biosystems and Integrative Sciences Institute, a R&D unit based at the Faculdade de Ciências ULisboa.
