I coordinate a research laboratory which covers a broad range of topics unified by one theme: protein misfolding in human disease. Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases and many metabolic disorders are examples of pathologies caused by defective protein folding or aggregation. Through biochemistry, biophysics and molecular biology approaches we investigate mechanisms of protein misfolding, aggregation and formation of amyloids, in connection to physiopathological conditions. Specifically, we are investigating processes related to the biological regulation of amyloid formation in Alzheimer's and in mitochondrial diseases. The laboratory pursues an integrated experimental approach, from studies in molecules to cells to organisms, to investigate the mechanisms and the molecular basis of disease with high societal impact, such as Alzheimer's . Our research laboratory is part of BioISI, Biosystems and Integrative Sciences Institute, a R&D unit based at the Faculdade de Ciências ULisboa.

TWIN2PIPSA is an EU twinning project coordinated by Faculdade Ciências/ULisboa that is aimed to improve R&I capacities in the field of protein folding biophysics and conformational diseases by partnering with three world-leading research and technological development performers: the University of Copenhagen, Tel Aviv University, and the University of Cambridge. This Research Topic, in two back to back volumes, is dedicated to the Biochemistry of Amyloids, with emphasis on the biochemical aspects of amyloid-related protein aggregation and its involvement in the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying neurodegenerative diseases. Understanding molecular processes involved in protein misfolded diseases is essential to establish effective therapies.

As the Editor of the SpringerBriefs book series on ‘Protein Folding and Structure’ I am responsible for achieving and maintaining the timeliness and high scholarly standards for the Series. My activities involve i) developing and expanding the series, ii) proposing suitable themes for volumes in the series; iii) - taking an active role in locating suitable manuscripts for the series as well as suitable authors to develop works for the series; iv) reviewing proposals for the series to ensure their suitability, or suggesting other reviewers who can evaluate projects proposed for the series; iv) advising authors on revisions needed or other matters concerning the scientific content and style of the manuscripts.

COST action - The Network for the Biology of Zinc (Zinc-Net) inc-Net Cost action TD1304 was a EU-funded multidisciplinary collaborative network of scientists and other stakeholders aimed to develop a coherent platform for discussion, collaborative research and dissemination of information relating to the role zinc plays in biology and biomedicine. As member of the Core Goup and Management Committee I participated in network strengthening decisions. It involved institutions within five regions: Toulouse, Bordeaux, Barcelona, Valencia, Lisbon. ITQB coordinated the Lisbon node, which involves the institutions within the Oeiras Associated Laboratory (ITQB, IBET, IGC).
