Clay McNail is the General Maintenance Manager for The Doe Run Company. Responsibilities include maintenance & repair of all stationary and mobile equipment located both on surface and underground. In 1998, Clay earned a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Mining Engineering with an emphasis in Explosives Engineering from the University of Missouri – Rolla, now Missouri University of Science & Technology. He completed Missouri S&T’s Distance Learning program earning a Master’s of Engineering in Mining Engineering with a minor in Explosive’s Engineering. While enrolled as an undergraduate, Clay worked for ASARCO – Missouri Lead Division during the summers and began working with Hanson Aggregates as a Mine Supervisor upon graduation. He began his Doe Run career in 2006 as a Mine Supervisor at the Brushy Creek Mine and a year later was promoted to General Mine Supervisor. Starting in 2010, Clay began the role as Mine Superintendent at the Fletcher Mine, gaining Brushy Creek Mine for a year from 2015-2016 and finally adding Sweetwater Mine to his responsibilities in 2019. His role included managing Fletcher’s pillar recovery program and mine development. Fletcher Mine annually produces 1.2 million tons of ore containing lead, zinc, and copper minerals while also placing 200,000 tons of cemented back-fill each year while Sweetwater Mine produces one million tons of similar ore. In 2022, Clay had the opportunity to move to the Maintenance Department to help improve the reliability of the Sweetwater Mine.Clay is one of the original founding members of the University of Missouri – Rolla’s student chapter of International Society of Explosives Engineers and served as its first Vice-President. He has been a contributing member of SME since 1994 and will be the Program Area Manager for Operations at MineExchange 2024. Other groups and organizations include Kappa Sigma Fraternity, Masonic Lodge (Missouri & Georgia), and Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks.Clay was inducted into Missouri University of Science and Technology's School of Mines & Metallurgy Academy in the spring of 2023.
