Ever since I was a boy, I have taken comfort in words. When my family moved across states when I was nine and I was forced to leave the world I had known behind, I found peace in the world of Middle Earth through J. R. R. Tolkien's "The Hobbit", and this experience led me to become a lifelong reader. I view the study of literature as a noble pursuit for truth through changing times and cultures, aided by imagination and the gift of language. Books are the unique vehicles by which we can access the thoughts of others and glean the wisdom of the ages. As my passion for words and stories has evolved, I have devoted the last half decade to encouraging this same passion in others. In my teaching at The University of Tennessee and at Pellissippi State Community College, I have aimed to cultivate curiosity in my students and to learn alongside them as I develop my materials each semester. While my course assignments have varied widely, my favorite course to teach is Freshman Composition infused with the special topic "Myth and Popular Culture", a pet project which guides students through the intersections between language, fantasy, and modern storytelling from Medieval fairy stories to 21st-century Marvel blockbusters. As a proud nerd, this allows me ample opportunity to discuss topics which can bridge the usually considerable gap between teacher and student interests.Outside of the classroom, I can probably be found researching my next travel adventure or the latest trend in photography. My travel itch keeps me up at night, and I am always looking for another glimpse of the landscapes which have inspired my favorite flights of fancy! When I'm not teaching or manically searching for the best deal on plane tickets to Iceland or Norway, I'm likely spending time with my wife Chelsea, who shares my affinity for all things fantastical, relaxing on the couch rewatching "Dr. Who" for the hundredth time or learning to stomach "The Vampire Diaries", the truest sign of my love for her!
