I was the Residential Assistant for International Village Living Learning Community. I had the opportunity to build and maintain a residential community through programming, acting as a para-counselor for students, being a familiar first resource for students with academic or institutional questions, and enforcing residence policies. International Village was a special experience in addition to being an RA because half of my residents were exchange students from various parts of the world including Hong Kong, France, Australia, and Spain.

I spent 3 years working in the Biometrics Lab at Clarkson University under Dr. Stephanie Schuckers Ph.D. My interest in biometrics began in Washington, DC where I was invited to a Leadership Summit designed to introduce minorities to the field of Biometrics. My time as an undergraduate in the lab was spent analyzing and organizing participant data files, presenting research projects such as Iris Detection and Speaker Recognition, and assisting with graduate projects. During my senior year I performed administrative duties in the main office for Biometrics such as scheduling lab meetings, ordering research supplies, and updating the budget monthly.

I began working in at the Clarkson University Library in 2012 as a Circulation Desk worker. In 2014 changes were made to the administration that allowed for students to work as supervisors and I ceased the opportunity. As a student supervisor, I was the direct report for student circulation desk workers. I was responsible for finding a replacement worker in emergency situations. I had system permissions to add new patron records, and I worked with iLLiad an interlibrary loans system to borrow books that were not available locally. I also communicated regularly with the Library Director and other Superiors to help improve student and staff library services.

As the President of the Clarkson University NSBE Chapter, I worked diligently to increase the quality and quantity of membership. I started initiatives such as supporting the 'It Can Wait' movement by AT&T on campus by having students sign the petition to stop texting while driving. I planned and delegated chapter meetings each Sunday at 4pm, worked with other executive board members to increase the financial stability of the chapter by collecting dues and fundraising. As a result of my hard work and dedication to NSBE, we won Region I Chapter of the year in 2015. IMPETUS stands for Integrated Math and Physics for Entry to Undergraduate STEM (Science, Technology Engineering, Mathematics).During my time with IMPETUS I designed WebQuest and developed interactive curriculum for 7-12th graders to be implemented each week throughout the academic year to students in the after school program. I also had the opportunity to work as a Camp Leader during the annual week long 'Roller Coaster Camp' focused on science and technology behind building a roller coaster. This was a great opportunity to get students from a disadvantaged socioeconomic background excited about STEM. Fun Fact: A local high school graduate form IMPETUS later became one of my mentees in NSBE when she came to Clarkson as an undergraduate.

(1st Place Scientific Undergraduate Research Conference - SURE, 2nd Place Collegiate- Science and Technology Entry Program Statewide Conference)AbstractHow does a person’s motivational state impact their ability to control their impulses? Does emotional receptivity to mistakes play a role? This research explores the effect of emotional acceptance in explaining how motivation is related to self-regulation. Participants (N=114) were randomly assigned to an autonomous motivation, controlled motivation, or neutral condition. They then completed a state measure of mindfulness, which included indices of emotional awareness and emotional acceptance. Their self-regulatory capacity was measured using two instruments – the Stroop Test – which is an inhibition task assessing the ability to override dominant responses, and a goal-regulation essay – which was coded for indicators of goal difficulty, specificity, content, and planning. Prior research indicates that autonomous motivation leads to improved self-regulation, relative to controlled motivation. However, little research has examined why. Here, it was hypothesized that, because autonomy promotes openness and low defensiveness in responding, it would promote adaptive affective changes in self-regulation, as demonstrated by enhanced Stroop performance and better goal regulation. Results yielded a positive correlation between autonomy and performance improvement. We also found evidence that emotional acceptance acts as a mediator in the link between motivation and self-regulation.
