Creating deep emotive musical languages that build cultural and artistic bridges, the music of Andrea Clearfield is performed widely in the U.S. and abroad. She has been praised by the New York Times for her “graceful tracery and lively, rhythmically vital writing”, the Philadelphia Inquirer for her “virtuosity”, “compositional wizardry” and “mastery with large choral and instrumental forces", the L.A. Times for her “fluid and glistening orchestration” and Opera News for her "vivid and galvanizing work, achieving a timeless beauty". She has written 160+ works for opera, chorus, orchestra, chamber ensemble, dance and multimedia. Recent compositions are inspired by Tibetan music fieldwork that she conducted in the Nepalese Himalaya. Among her works are sixteen cantatas including one for The Philadelphia Orchestra. She has been awarded a 2020 Pew Center International Residency Award, a 2016 Pew Fellowship in the Arts, two Independence Foundation Fellowships and Fellowships at the Rockefeller's Bellagio Center, American Academy in Rome, Yaddo, MacDowell and Copland House among others. Dr. Clearfield sits on the Boards of the Recording Academy/Grammy's Philadelphia Chapter and Wildflower Composers. She received a DMA in Composition from Temple University where she was a two-time recipient of the Heller Award for Excellence in Composition and the first composer in the university to receive the prestigious Presidential Fellowship. She served on the composition faculty at The University of the Arts from 1986 - 2011. She is active as a pianist, curator and public speaker. Passionate about creating community around the arts, she is also founder of the renowned Philadelphia SALON featuring contemporary, classical, jazz, electronic, dance, multimedia and world music since 1986, now a hybrid, with performers live in Philadelphia and streamed in from around the world.
