The most exciting aspect of this job was the challenge of communicating unscripted with a variety of different people and managing a wide array of interpersonal dynamics. My goal was to ensure guests have as much fun as possible while also emboldening them to work together as a cohesive team. To achieve this goal I quickly determined guests’ enthusiasm levels, communication styles, and unique abilities, and then fostered an environment in which they could embrace their own skills and better understand the role they fulfilled within their group. I frequently managed corporate team-building events in which I analyzed specific archetypical strengths, weaknesses, and leadership styles, and then tailored my feedback to encourage teams to follow their company’s specific developmental guidelines. I balanced each guest’s enjoyment with the smooth operation of Puzzle Break as a whole, ensuring events began on time, that the flow of one event did not disrupt another, and that long-term projects were completed efficiently and on time.

This position was in an SPF mouse vivarium housing ~100 cages. I was half of a 2-person team responsible for all daily animal husbandry and facility care. I fulfilled all aspects of the breeding protocol from weaning to euthanasia, performed medical treatments and necropsies, and prepared mice for experimental procedures. For 3 months I ran the facility on my own while my direct supervisor was on leave. I maintained both a stock inventory and an animal database, participated in SOP creation, and was responsible for ensuring open communication between husbandry staff and the research group.

I worked in the Lab Services division of the Facilities department at ISB. I provided research support through chemical shipment, storage, and disposal; liquid media and plate preparation, full maintenance of the tissue culture and mass spectrometry rooms, compressed gas storage and set-up, regular wet bench decontamination, and lab equipment operation and troubleshooting.

During my internship with Dr. Baliga's lab I primarily worked on two projects: an anaerobic coculture of Methanococcus (MMp) and Desulfovibrio (DvH), and a mutated yeast producing a component of biodegradable plastic (PHB).In the anaerobic study we isolated and characterized the genes involved in mutant sulfate metabolism with the goal of identifying control genes and building a data network that could accurately predict control genes. During this study I performed DNA and RNA extractions, ran PCR and prepared primer templates, and maintained sterile & anaerobic conditions across media, tools, and experimental environment.I managed every growth aspect of the yeast study from set up to purification of PHB, including DNA and RNA extractions to monitor relevant genes. The most vital aspects of the experiments were rapid RNA collection and prompt delivery of processed data.

I undertook a paper-to-digital organizing project in which I ensured teacher and student records were collated, digitized, and then archived in an easy-to-access manner.
