Avionics System EngineerL3Harris Technologies Dec 2019 - Jan 2022TexasThis group develops, designs, deploys and support avionics systems on certain military aircraft.System Integration Lab Design: The first project I was involved in was the complete re-design of the integration labs used by the military for this aircraft. It entailed all the design to make an aircraft worth of flight equipment operate in a stationary room but perform as if it was in flight so we could perform testing and validation on equipment and systems. This project required extensive design and planning, followed by fabrication of racks and racks of wiring harnesses, validation, and systematic integration.Experimental systems testing: Became flight certified on the subject military aircraft and flew on test flights to test and troubleshoot next-gen developmental systems. Between flights coordinated with Air Force and vendors for troubleshooting, development, and next steps. Ground station testing: Operated equipment at a Multi-Sensor Test Facility to track test flights and measure critical information and parameters from the tests they were performing.Test equipment design: In response to an urgent need I personally designed, manufactured, and assembled a piece of equipment that simulated all the level sensors in an aircraft fuel system in such a way that the aircraft equipment thought it was connected to real fuel tanks. As this was a rapid response project, there were only two weeks from the beginning of the project to installation of the completed, calibrated unit. -
Electrical EngineerL3Harris Technologies Jun 2017 - Dec 2019Greenville, Texas, United StatesThis position is where I started my engineering career. L3Harris trained me in the ways of detail oriented design of complex systems to solve difficult problems for aircraft operating in the most hostile environments.Training: After being trained and gaining experience I became a SME (Subject Matter Expert) in multiple of their internal systems and CAD softwares and began training new hires in both engineering and how to use the internal systems.Liaison Engineering: This was one of the highlights. I became the point of contact for our program for shop and hangar questions. This involved rapidly responding to any questions about engineering, typically requiring me to get on the aircraft with a technician, understand the problem, design and document the solution, get formal approval (including FAA), and then brief the shop on our solution so they could proceed. This was a fantastic fit as I enjoy both design and integration of engineering and love working through the mess when engineering meets the real worldFull System Design: In this position I was given my first opportunities to lead complete system designs for aircraft systems. Starting with the customer asking us put a "thing" on the aircraft to the research, definition, planning, and documentation. Then following it up with design, review, procurement, and installation of the design. The above experience equipped me and led me to my next position as a Systems Engineer.
