Open to the public, the Columbus Lodge seeks the promotion and extension of charitable, civic, and social pursuits. It upholds and perpetuates the highest standards in the community. Its creation and perpetuation of true friendship,dedicates a portion of our time and energy to unselfish service to our fellow citizens and to emphasize the humanitarian virtues in our daily lives. The Columbus Lodge cooperates and participates in all important enterprises formulated for the improvement and common welfare of the Town of Hamden and surrounding towns.

The Commission conducts research into business and industrial conditions in the town and seeks to coordinate activities, i.e., develop relationships between business owners, promote the "buy local" concept, advertising, and prepare/distribute books, maps, charts/pamphlets which furthers its official purposes.The EDC not only concentrates its efforts on business retention/expansion, but also with business attraction, and marketing of the community/region.The Commission is seeking to bring new businesses to the Main Street Historic District and for the other opportunities available within our industrial/commercial areas. Green technology and medical/business office space are just a few of the economic developments available for newly or existing established going concerns. The EDC staged the second annual Discover Durham Business Expo in 2010. Over 40 businesses, artists and artisans participated as sponsors. The event is unique in the state of Connecticut, while there are several business expos sponsored by regional groups, very few individual towns promote their businesses this way. The event was funded completely through the donations of sponsoring businesses. The Discover Durham Business Expo is open to manufacturers, retailers, contractors, professionals and home occupations located in town, as well as artists, artisans and farmers. It showcases the entrepreneurs and myriad businesses in town and offers an opportunity for the public to discover the breadth of talent within our borders.
