As an award-winning Contech executive with real estate development and construction background, I identify problems and then encourage my team to brainstorm solutions.For example, at Soil Connect, team meetings were always done on a white board. I would present the topic or problem that we needed to solve, and I would always solicit ideas from the team before giving my answer. I never wanted to influence the conversation in the early part of the brainstorming. I encouraged unbiased, honest, impartial answers from the team before I decided if there was way to solve was better than mine. Therefore, I hire people who are positive, glass half-full personalities, and give everyone the ability to earn equity in the company.I have developed thousands of acres of land into homes, apartments, retail establishments, and some industrial building worth up to about $500M. I find absolute satisfaction of taking raw land and turning it into a neighborhood, where people move, raise families, and live a good life. I feel like an artist who takes a blank canvas and creates something.For my tech startup, Soil Connect, I jumped into an unknown world, maybe oblivious and definitely naive, but nonetheless I was able to harness my experience to create a platform / marketplace that makes the world better. The hardest thing to do in the tech world, but even more difficult in the construction world, is changing behavior: convincing a successful corporate executive to try something new and potentially risk an outcome. Because no one wants to be the first to try something new. Therefore, leading the company took a lot of time and trial and error to figure out the best approach to pitch these executives and to win them other.In everything I do I preach simplicity. I would repeatedly tell the tech team to not give me a demo of what they finished if it took me more than five minutes to learn it.
