Cliff is a distinguished energy lawyer and seasoned business executive of over 45 years. Management and law at Gulf Canada was followed by private practice. He was 20 years at McCarthy Tétrault LLP in roles including partner, Energy/Oil & Gas Practice Group Leader, Member-National Management Committee and Regional Managing Partner, Alberta. In 2006 he assumed senior executive/legal roles for two oil and gas corporations, one public and one private. He returned to private practice in 2012 with a boutique firm and later as energy group leader with a regional firm. In 2019, he started Cliff Johnson Law as an independent practice. His legal skills have been acknowledged in Chamber’s Global “the World’s Leading Lawyers”, Lexpert, Who’s Who Legal, Legal Media Guide to the World’s Leading Lawyers, and Best Lawyers in Canada. He has extensive corporate, not for profit, educational research, and private club board experience. Roles have included Chair, CEO, President, Executive Vice-President, Vice-President, General Counsel, and Corporate Secretary.Cliff’s experience encompasses virtually all aspects of the energy business emphasizing oil and gas. Matters have included M & A , property acquisitions and divestitures, joint ventures, partnerships, product supply, purchase and transportation, mid-stream and pipeline facilities, environment, contaminated sites, regulatory compliance (Alberta Environment and Parks and the Alberta Energy Regulator) , co-generation and power, royalties and net profits, dispute resolution ( including as arbitrator/mediation counsel), share and debt financing, corporate governance, and director and officer liability.He has prepared over 70 papers and articles on energy and business topics, many presented at research seminars. His articles have been published in the Alberta Law Review, Petroleum Supplement, and other publications. He has been accepted as a legal authority and expert witness. Two papers were referenced in Court of Queen’s Bench cases. He is a Law Society of Alberta member and Law Society of England and Wales past member.
