Within one year, ShareTel was the largest switchless reseller in Manitoba, with a market share of 10% of all business long-distance. In 1997, when regulation changed, and ShareTel was no longer required, it was sold to the Manitoba Telephone System. By this time, ShareTel was its largest customer.

Manitoba Gateway was a facilities-based carrier operating in Manitoba. It was set up by Watson & Associates at the behest of the Manitoba Government. As an unregulated carrier, it was able to offer very low rates, and thus attract call centre business to Manitoba from the U.S. The company operated two DS-3s and set up its own border crossing on the Canada-U.S. border. This border crossing set a precedent in that it was the first border crossing owned and operated by any company other than a Type 1 carrier. We arranged CRTC and FCC approvals. In 1997, when deregulation occurred, the company was sold to the Manitoba Telephone System.
