Began as VP Engineering at Metapa -- a startup producing a database application middleware layer to cache responses of queries to a remote Oracle RDBMS. Led the architecture/design of the implementation; implemented a custom JDBC driver; implemented a class hierarchy mapping between Oracle and PostgreSQL schema objects; and implemented a number of other core modules. Bought by Metapa in 2003, the product shifted to a clustered data warehouse RDBMS based on PostgreSQL. Led the architecture of the approach (introducing some of the initial concepts) and implemented several PostgreSQL extensions.

Experience was wide and varied during my tenure at Sterling Software's VM Software Division (nee VM Software). Initially the sixth employee at a very young startup, my roles varied from systems software developer to systems architect to group manager to a business development analyst.Major development contributions included completion and substantial extension of the company’s VMBackup product and contributions to other VM/SP/ESA system utility products and design and development of the company’s VM:Webserver for OfficeVision product.As a senior architect, led an effort to develop an NCSC Orange Book C2/B1 offering for IBM VM/ESA.As the manager of Architecture and Design, oversaw the development of several new products including a Rexx language compiler and the first of the company’s network products; introduced PCs, the C language, and IP networking to the development organization; oversaw the introduction of the first usability lab into the development organization; and oversaw the company’s first efforts into products for the IBM AS/400 platform, CORBA DCE, and UNIX. For the CORBA DCE project, led the company’s first international development effort with team members in Virginia, Australia, and the UK.Served as a general technical/consultant for due diligence and integration work across platforms for a number of the company’s acquisitions and as a cross-divisional resource for issue analysis/resolution and new product planning.Also served as a consultant to IBM on the introduction of a backup API to the VM Shared File System (SFS) and the support of SFS by OfficeVision/VM.
