Firewalk Studios provided an amazing opportunity to grow my skills and scope both as an engineer and a lead. Taking over from our initial services architect and team lead, I built a small team focused on building and integrating backend services for a AAA squad-based FPS title. We transitioned from an initial goal of creating bespoke service infrastructure to an integration-and-customization based approach partnering with AccelByte, which better leveraged our small team and kept the focus on our core mission - providing a great player experience.In addition to developing our custom services (using Rust, C# and C++), we also leveraged outsourcing partners such as Jetpack Interactive to help with integration to the many services a AAA game has utilize - authentication, matchmaking, analytics, build distribution, store services and more. We also worked with first-party teams such as Sony's Online Technology Group to load test the game and prepare for Launch Day and steady-state loads, as each of these regimes provides interesting challenges for infrastructure. Working with external teams presents unique challenges, such as differences in time zones, scheduling and priorities - I enjoyed learning how best to utilize talented folks who weren't a direct part of our organization.While in the end our game did not get the market reception we hoped for, I am still proud of our team and the fantastic work we did. Our services and infrastructure performed well and our operational practices were sound and well-prepared. And I will bring all of this experience and passion to any future project.
