Once I figured out I wouldn’t be able to realistically survive on playing saxophone alone, I figured it was a good time to get serious about where life was going to take me. My journey officially started at the University of Northern Iowa, where I thought high school music teacher was the title I was destined to have. Cedar Falls was also separated from my hometown by a city street, literally, and the majority of my immediate family lived in the vicinity as well. Being comfortable was the idea, even though I should’ve been anything but.As it turns out, a hobbyist’s attachment to playing Basie, Miller, and Ellington doesn’t always translate well to teaching. After having a heart-to-heart with my advisor and learning where my professional passions lie, a school change was in order. Thinking back to what made me truly, unequivocally happy as a high school student, besides making music, writing and sports were the bees knees. I could say the Seahawks were the best team in the NFL and write you a blurb for a newspaper like nobody’s business. The obvious itch needing scratching was Journalism. I made the transfer to the University of Iowa, and the rest was history. The program offered a number of outlets for creativity, including the wonderfully-staffed and well-supported Daily Iowan Newspaper and Daily Iowan TV. At Iowa, it’s required that you at minimum have a concentration in a second area as a specialization of sorts, and Sports Studies was the obvious play. Through Daily Iowan TV, as well as the Iowa Journalist, I honed my writing and video editing skills. I also gained specialties in other areas - DaVinci Resolve, Premiere, Final Cut, Audacity, Garageband, Website Making, media relations, SEO, and Photoshop. To this point, there hasn’t been something I haven’t been able to do with the right amount of determination, and I never see a task as too daunting.
