Designer

Clint Mclean Design (Www.Clintmclean.Design)

Los Angeles | Dubai, United Arab Emirates | Durban, South Africa

Over the past 6 years, I have designed and built the Niemand Collection: The Birds of Paradise, an exploration of social geometry and proximity, imperfection, and uncertainty in an age of isolation and anxiety. Niemand advocates for cohesion in the lap of the birds of paradise. The preview exhibition of the Collection is now open, and password admittance is available on request.

Director

Ubuntu Army

South Africa

Since March 2020, I have directed Ubuntu Army, a social justice movement that has fed hundreds of thousands of vulnerable Africans in Southern Africa, provided crisis relief in the face of widespread riots and looting, devastating floods and unimaginable poverty, and become a real voice for the poor. Ubuntu Army serves on the ground. Without filter, Ubuntu Army tackles the issues of poverty in their natural, brutal state. Over the past three years, I have grown Ubuntu Army from a small local grassroots group, into an international non-profit organisation, with registration and representation on three continents, and a support base of thousands of ordinary people and organisations. Ubuntu Army has done the work, authentically, with very little dedicated marketing. I have reconfigured the non-profit model, moved far from the traditional revenue-based models, and created a connection-based, ever expanding organisation that I believe stands a real chance of addressing the structural poverty that characterises South Africa.

I am a versatile and skilled designer and fabricator, working in multiple mediums, within a diverse range of processes, using a wide array of tools and techniques. I am truly grounded in the design and fabrication process, have thoroughly enjoyed the challenges presented to me over the past 25 years, and truly look forward to the next 25 years of design and fabrication that lies ahead of me. Director Producer

Punksoul Pictures

Durban, Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa

I started Punksoul Pictures in 2009, to produce boutique film and television content. We produced a wide range of film, television, documentary and commercial projects. Although I stepped away from Punksoul Pictures in 2017, to concentrate on completing the design and fabrication of the Niemand Collection, Punksoul remains open, well respected and hungry to explore future projects.

Apr 2009 - Apr 2017

Director Producer

Ixmedia

Durban, Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa

I partnered in iXMedia, a media production company and animation house, serving as executive producer and director on all productions. During my time with iXMedia, I produced a number of documentaries and commercials for global audiences, and secured a number of awards and nominations.

Jul 2005 - Mar 2009

Director

Earth Sea Foundation

Bazaruto Island, Mozambique | London | Los Angeles

I created the Earth Sea Foundation, initially to build a school and launch an environmental education program on Bazaruto Island in Mozambique. The Foundation was registered as charity in the United Kingdom in 1998, and successfully raised the funds required to build the school, build a teachers precinct and develop the skills of five island staff members. The logics and strategies described in the program proposal remain relevant to this day, and are applied where financially possible by local Earth Sea partners. The project was in many ways a success, although, the pressure of corrupt local politics proved to be a major factor in my withdrawal of the foundation from Mozambique.

May 1998 - Jun 2005

Production Designer And Host

London, England, United Kingdom | Los Angeles, California

I served as Production Designer for Channel 4’s multi-award-winning Scrapheap Challenge and Discovery Channel’s Emmy nominated Junkyard Wars and Operation Junkyard, where I designed and fabricated all sets, both static and location based. I served as the head of the Art, Construction, Engineering and Logistics and Transport Departments for Scrapheap Challenge, Junkyard Wars and Operation Junkyard. I led a team of 45 members in the execution of a diverse range of ever changing, dynamic, environment specific, builds and activations. I administered the budgets for five separate departments and served on the executive, second tier, budget team for Scrapheap Challenge, Junkyard Wars and Operation Junkyard.I designed challenge formats and safety protocols, generated OSHA and Risk Assessments, and served as part of the under-water rescue team for Scrapheap Challenge, Junkyard Wars and Operation Junkyard.I served as the Yard Boss of a functioning reclamation yard and managed a broad spectrum of reclamation materials and HAZMAT incidents. I performed safety inspections and fabrication on the 330 challenge vehicles created during the filming of Scrapheap Challenge, Junkyard Wars and Operation Junkyard, working on vehicles ranging from vintage aircraft to hover craft, jet bikes to mud tractors. I co-ordinated the logistics of transporting a large fleet of trucks, abnormal load vehicles, extensive tool and plant and a 200 strong production crew, on 140 occasions, into a variety of challenging and hostile natural environments, including deserts, snow drifts, glaciers, rivers, canyons, salt flats, mountains and densely populated cities. I co-hosted Operation Junkyard, in the capacity of on-screen engineer. I appointed, trained, and managed designers and art departments working on RDF Media’s various productions in Europe and United States.
