I've achieved a lot over the span of 18 years as a Red Seal Parts Technician but what I didn't expect from the fast paced and challenging industry is something that almost everyone in a high achieving role will experience... Stress and BurnoutI'm an overachiever and what comes with being an overachiever is... you guessed it, stress and burnout. Overachievers are people who thrive to meet deadline, goals, and accomplishments set forth by not only their employers but also by themselves. You see, for someone who works really hard to prove their worth, their value and to show the world that they are capable, stress and burn out is inevitable and eventually, this stress and burnout starts to show up at work, at home and takes a toll both mentally and physically. This all came to head for me when I took on a Management role in a company that was headed for huge growth. What the company (and myself) did not realize is that, being an overachiever, meant I was able to meet all the deadline, goals and responsibilities, but that came at a huge cost. As the department I was managing grew, so did the stress of managing it. I was short staffed, managing now 2 stores and continuing to scale the department. I was burning out and fast. The constant sleepless nights, roller coaster of emotions, short fuse and inability to keep it together brought me to realize that I was experiencing severe burnout, something that is yet to be clinically identified. After seeking professional help, I brought my burnout to my employer, who at the time, was not equipped to provide any tools or resources (outside of the typical "stress leave") to help me navigate these new challenges and struggles. Because I was not able to get the help I needed to continue to be the overachiever I was, I felt the need to re-evaluate what was important in my life and heading down this destructive and unhealthy path was not an option. It was at that time I chose to resign from my position and leave the industry to pursue something I identified as a need in our community... More education and support for those struggling with stress and burnout. I am proud to say that I have now achieved my level 3 certification in stress and burnout and have the tools (and experience) to help others who are struggling to identify and provide solutions for their stress and burnout in the workplace.
