Chief Financial Officer
Matrix Asset Management
Canada
GrowthWorks is a subsidiary of Matrix Asset Management, a publicly held, diversified asset management firm. I was recruited into the role of CFO to drive growth and diversification while minimizing risk. I managed all financial aspects of the $50M company including monthly and annual financial reports, internal and external audits and compliance, budgeting, and strategic planning. I reported directly to the GrowthWorks Board Manager, as well as four independent venture capital fund boards. In this capacity, I attended and presented at each entities’ quarterly board meetings. When I came on board, I was tasked with leading my team through a period of rapid growth through multiple acquisitions. Subsequently, I navigated my team through an 87% downsizing and eventual sale. ▶ I have held mission-critical roles in the company’s acquisitions and divestitures. I conducted due diligence on the acquisition of Mavrix Fund Management, Inc., in 2009—adding to the company’s retail mutual funds and flow-through LP funds portfolio. I also served as team lead in the reverse takeover of SEAMARK Asset Management in 2010 by means of a backdoor listing—creating the new parent public company, Matrix Asset Management. Finally, I executed all aspects of the sale of SEAMARK and Mavrix in 2014. ▶ In an effort to grow the company, minimize exposure to risk, and diversify assets, I navigated the company through a transition from venture funds to mutual funds and from pure retail to institutional sales. ▶ To secure long-term lending, I completed all due diligence materials requested by SEAMARK, CIBC World Markets, Royal Bank, and RCMorris. ▶ To address cash flow challenges, I worked closely with the CEO and other senior executives to explain our situation and strategize on our options. I then guided the sale of several assets to maintain liquidity and avoid CCAA proceedings. ▶ I spearheaded the full RFP process to change auditors from Hay & Watson to Deloitte.
