In 1995 I realized that I wanted to move out of Aerospace Engineering and into computer programming. I taught myself C programming on my own time using Linux at home and then moved on to Boeing Flight Test as a software tester. While taking on programming responsibilities I took off-hours classes in Java and later found a position in 1998 with a project building a new Java/Oracle application that let engineers author airplane maintenance documentation. By 2011 I was leading that project through 3 week agile release cycles. After Boeing elected to move my organization to southern California in March of 2014 I found another position at Boeing named Toolbox that delivered airplane maintenance documentation to airline customers. I spent roughly 1/3 of the time as an application developer and 2/3 as and infrastructure developer where I used public cloud technologies (initially AWS but transitioned to Azure), Chef and Python to configure developer and application infrastructure.During my Toolbox experience I was exposed to the development methods of Pivotal Labs (Now VMWare Tanzu) and in 2017 I looked for and found a project at Boeing that was committed to using these methods (primarily TDD, XP, and self organized balanced teams). My preference is projects that embrace agile and DevOps practices and that are highly collaborative (pairing is great!). On all my projects I’ve been able to advance quickly by learning and applying new skills, collaborating with others, and taking on more and more responsibility and leadership over time.

In 2018 I searched for a project at Boeing that followed the principles of Pivotal Labs (now VMware Tanzu Labs). I found the Alchemy project, a new .NET Framework application that orchestrates sales campaigns for commercial airplanes. The application used Entity Framework (EF) for object/relational mapping and schema updates on deployment and used Jenkins and Cloud Foundry to orchestrate CI/CD pipelines. While strictly a .NET/Razor UI initially, we eventually converted 90% of the UI to React.Major Accomplishments: In six months I learned a new tech stack (.NET), a new way to work (XP) and a new set of business rules and became the team's Development lead.Converted the .NET/Razor UI to React. We never stopped delivering new functionality to our customers during the conversion. My previous Java/Spring Boot experience allowed me spin up quickly and support a team that had been decimated by the Boeing layoffs in 2020.

In Dec of 2014 I started supporting the next generation of Boeing's Toolbox application - an application used by Boeing engineers and airline customers to view and manage aircraft maintenance documentation. This application was initially hosted in AWS but was migrated to Azure. On Toolbox we employed the Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) and I was a team member or scrum master on both application development and infrastructure support teams. Roughly half of this time was spent automating the creation of infrastructure using templates - Cloud Formation (AWS) and Azure Resource Manager (ARM) - in conjunction with Chef.Major Accomplishments:Deployed and administered Cloud Foundry (PCF) in AWS for a pilot team of developers working with Pivotal Labs to improve our Agile development processes.Responded quickly to customer needs when I implemented a Cloud Foundry Service Broker for Elasticsearch in Python.Member of a team that created CI/CD pipelines in VSTS (now Azure DevOps) that created our application infrastructure and deployed our services into Microsoft Service Fabric using Python.
