I fell into the auto industry by accident and it was the best mistake I ever made. After moving to Colorado, in the aftermath of the housing market collapse, I found myself underemployed and barely able to pay rent or student debt. This compounded when my vehicle succumbed to a long struggle with everything that can affect a 1999 Chevrolet Express (As an aside, I purchased this with what I later learned was a rolled back odometer. Be careful when working with private parties.); leaving me with next to no income and no transportation.Thankfully, I was able to find a way to fix both problems in one swing; I was able to convince an auto dealership to give me a sales role on the condition that I bought a car from them! I was so grateful for the opportunity I decided to pick up every bad habit a sales rep could have to show them how committed I was to pretending to be a car sales rep! Surprisingly, this didn't result in the commission checks I had imagined and I found myself about to be either thrown or kicked out the door, depending on the strength level of the manager on duty. On what should have been my last day, I was given the scariest pep talk of my life, which alluded to the fact that I wasn't good at sales because I thought I was too good for sales. At the time, I viewed frontline sales the way that many people do, as a temporary job that is okay for now but hopefully will lead to something better. I was told that if I wanted to stop being broke, I needed to stop acting like a rock star with a sales job and to actually BE a rock star at my sales job.Over more than a decade, I committed to the auto industry, mastered some of the craft and experienced success on most levels. I've felt the rush of breaking gross profit records, the exhaustion of thirty consecutive work days, the triumph of dragging a flailing store into the black, the frustration of working twelve consecutive cash deals, and everything in between. All of this is what made me stop acting, stop being afraid to accept myself, and stop pretending that I was ever meant to be anything else. All of this made me into a car guy, which is what I'll be for the rest of my life and wish I would have realized sooner.I know this section is where I should have listed all my awards and achievements but I think at the end of the day what I have to offer is greater than any of my sales records or certifications. The bottom line is that I love this industry and would love an opportunity to share my passion with your group and see what we can accomplish together.
