The UN projects that Africa will overtake Asia as the world's most populous continent within 100 years.I've had a love affair with Africa all my adult life since I first went there as the first black Peace Corps Volunteer math teacher in Gambia, West Africa from 1970-1972--before going to Stanford Business School for my MBA.In Peace Corps Gambia in 1972, I met Alex Haley before Roots was published in 1976, the story of how the author traced his African ancestor, Kunta Kinte, to Juffure Village in Gambia.Some 40 years after Peace Corps Gambia, I took my 3 adult children and 4-year-old granddaughter on a pilgrimage back to Africa, where my family met the Gambia Vice President.When I was leaving Peace Corps Gambia for Stanford Business School in 1972, I told myself: "First time around, I saw Africa from the bottom up as a Peace Corps Volunteer and math teacher. Next time around, I want to see Africa from a different perspective as a businessman."But for a number of reasons, after I earned my Stanford MBA, I was unable to get back to Africa over the course of my business career.But then along came The Stanford Institute for Innovation in Developing Economies (SEED).From 2013-2014, I was one of the first five pioneer Stanford business coaches based in Ghana, West Africa for SEED--mentoring 6 high potential small businesses: 4 from Ghana, 1 from Nigeria, and 1 from Sierra Leone.As a Stanford business coach in West Africa, I came across a UN population graph that symbolizes what I call "The Africa of the Future." In that population graph, the UN projects that Africa will overtake Asia as the world's most populous continent within 100 years.Because of my 3 significant engagements, I believe my mission for the rest of my life is to be a messenger with a message about the Africa of the future.
