I enlisted in the NZ Army out of 7th Form (Year 13) and served, also operationally overseas, with the Royal New Zealand Armoured Corps now Queen Alexandra's Mounted Rifles from 1992-1997. In 1997 I moved to Brisbane, Queensland in Australia and gained a South Bank Institute of TAFE trade certificate in horticulture and also in turf management operating a landscape business and subsequently working as a greenkeeper on Indooroopilly Golf Course. I enrolled at the University of Queensland in 2003 gaining a bachelor's degree in environmental management majoring in Sustainable Development whilst working part time security in 2008. Working summers with the Bay of Plenty Regional Council in NZ I migrated back to NZ in 2009 and started a consultancy, C D Consultants, contracting to the Bay of Plenty Regional Council. My initial contract with BOPRC was to inspect, record, report and transition the licensing of Rotorua Lakes Structures to resource consents for property owners. Working within the regulatory and enforcement team I also became involved in the monitoring and enforcement of the Resource Management Act, Regional Land and Water Plan and associated resource consents. At that time I decided to continue my Te Reo journey and attended at nights Level 1 and 2 Te Reo classes at Te Whare Takiura o Waiariki (Insitute of Technology) in Koutu. In 2012 I took on an Environmental Monitoring Officer role with Tauranga City Council investigating breaches of the District/ City Plan monitoring resource consents for all types of activities in the Tauranga rohe. In 2015 I was promoted to Team Leader of Environmental Monitoring, which included, City Plan, Building Act (Code) and Fencing of Swimming Pool compliance. My team consisted of 3 Environmental Monitoring officers, whom investigated breaches of, monitored resource consents and enforced the RMA, Tauranga City Plan. The team also consisted of 3 building compliance officers and three fencing of swimming pool officers whom investigated breaches of the Building Act and Code and the Fencing of Swimming Pools Act and other associated legislation and regulations. In 2019 post a Tauranga City Council restructure, I gained employment with the New Zealand Defence Force as a contract Senior Environmental Officer with Defence Estate & Infrastructure for mainly RNZAF Base Ōhakea capital projects and upgrades.

Post procurement, with the preferred contractor, I setup and undertake all associated compliance, consenting, contractor/ consultant relationships, training and management, review and assist in the development of contractor environmental management plans/ erosion and sediment control plans, construction phase groundwater abstraction and discharge (dewatering) management plans, NES contaminated soils and land management process development e.g. Dewatering Monitoring and Contingency Management Plans, CSMPs, RAPs, WSRs etc. I use multiple software and applications to input/ analyse/ manipulate and report on information and data e.g. CSVue, ArcGIS, ESDat, Survey 123, Sharepoints, MS Office etc. to deliver projects. I also manage relationships with all relevant Territorial Authorities and other stakeholders e.g. Royal New Zealand Air Force and other Crown Entities e.g. Waka Kotahi, DOC etc. I whakawhanaungatanga (build relationships) with mana/ tangata whenua and develop/ enable/ organise ceremonies, hui, karakia (blessings), kaitiakitanga (cultural monitoring), agreements, memorandum of partnerships. I also incorporate mana/ tangata whenua feedback into resource consent applications. I manage notice of requirement submissions from adjacent Māori Landowners seeking agreements on designations for outline plans.
