As a social work intern for PROVE, I am helping empower student veterans to overcome the unique challenges of transitioning from the military into a civilian academic environment. I work with dozens of student veterans, both in groups and individually, from a wide range of backgrounds. In my work with veterans I utilize facilitated discussion, games, art practices, group excercise and a variety of other tools to build strong, impactful relationships between veterans and our organization. I also provide information and assistance navigating veterans' benefits systems, often advocating on their behalf with school officials of the VA.

Body Advocacy After School (BAAS) is an after-school program based in Washington, D.C. Our mission is to educate teens about how cultural beauty standards, body discrimination, and diet culture contribute to social and economic inequality, and an epidemic of mental health issues. The ultimate goal is to empower young people with the knowledge and support to become advocates for body respect and diversity in their schools and lives.As Co-founder, my role is multifaceted. From researching and writing curriculum, to maintaining strong relationships with our school partners, designing and building a website, and coordinating applications for grants and fellowships; getting this program off the ground has presented a variety of challenges and required me to be proactive and develop new skills quickly.

For several months, I was a key member of a small team working on an independent reporting project covering stories from the refugee crisis in the Mediterranean. As a contributor to this award-winning project, I built interactive graphics to communicate background information on the crisis and add a visual dimension to stories. I also helped design and code a web experience that brought the collection of stories together as a strong multimedia package.

I worked with Assistant Professor Steven King during August and December workshops at the UNC School of Media and Journalism. The workshops focused on teaching multimedia storytelling and blogging skills to journalists from the Raleigh WTVD News station. My job consisted of setting up workshop activities, helping communicate ideas during lectures, and guiding workshop participants in the use of various web-based video, graphic creation, and blogging tools.

I was hired in a temporary position to help design and develop a new WordPress website for the Marine Sciences department at UNC. I also assisted with transitioning content from the department’s old website onto the new CMS, as wells as pursuing new content ideas. In this position I worked closely with faculty and staff throughout the department to understand their individual needs and design a product that best communicated their professional goals and achievements.
