The best advice I ever got while in college: "Surround yourself with competent people." My whole career I have followed that advice. Now I have become that "competent" person.Starting in North Dakota, I did more than I was taught in college. I was project field engineer retrofitting all oil & gas separators with mass flow meters. I learned to not avoid complex tasks but to break them into manageable parts. I had to do this; I was also assigned as supervisor over a work-over rig & the field engineer in charge of a 58 well tank battery.When the opportunity arose, I changed my focus from production operations to drilling. In TX, MS, OK, AK & Inland Waters I learned to plan & drill a usable hole for my company. I became an expert at drilling, completion & work-over projects. Later I moved to Offshore & International Deep-water work.About a quarter of my career was spent in the field. Those times in the office I was adept at using my engineering to cost, plan, organize & manage projects.
