Following graduation around 1977 I spent a couple of years on site as an Engineer/ site manager before joining CJP [Now Cundall] for a few years followed by a couple of years in Local authority whist at the same time being an associate with Alan Quinn in Edinburgh and acting as an external consultant to BDN. Following the rumbling of my external activities I became a Partner in J W Wood in Durham taking with me the Local authority work acting as an external consultant. I became a chartered Structural Engineer around 1981 at the age of 25 followed by chartered membership of the Institution of Civil Engineers in 1982. J W Wood was sold to General Accident and following 3 torturous years under contract I formed the Structural Division of BDN to complement the established Project Management and Architectural activities of the already established company. I eventually became the major share holder and Managing Director of BDN . Together with the other share holder i sold the company to Richard Marsden under an MBO in 2019 and now continue in my role as a part time Senior Engineer. In the last 35 plus years i have been directly involved in the design and surveying of over 10000 structures ranging from simple domestic scale buildings up to the design of a 12 storey structure and an individual hospice with a current day value of around 25 million. I remain qualified under the SER system for projects north of the border. I have been fortunate enough to work on over 60 award winning schemes with some very special and talented people. This has to be tempered with an unreasonable proportion of the great unwashed, rouges and incompetents that unfortunately populate our industry.
