Clovis Palmer received his PhD from the University of Sydney and currently heads the Immunometabolism Lab at the Burnet Institute in Melbourne. He is a recipient of the 2010 NIH Inaugural Creative and Novel Ideas in HIV research grant (to bring immunometabolism to the field). His group pioneered study of glucose metabolism of immune cells directly from humans and first discovered a link between inflammation and dysfunctional glucose metabolism in immune cells in human disease. His research activities have established novel theories and concepts in HIV pathogenesis, including a terminology he coined: “T cell metabolic exhaustion”. This describes how reprogramming of CD4 T cells from oxidative phosphorylation towards glycolysis exhausts CD4 T cells of their energy reserves, leading to cell dysfunction. His research program has provided fresh theoretical perspectives and strategies in HIV Cure research, as well as establishing immune cell metabolism as critical to HIV persistence and inflammatory processes driving HIV-related co-morbidities. He completed the first study of immunometabolism in frailty, using high-throughput metabolomics, and identified novel molecular frailty signatures. With WIHS, USA (world’s largest cohort study of HIV+ women) through collaborators we confirmed a link between dysregulated monocyte metabolism and CVD.His research program also focuses on development of novel immunometabolism assays. This impacts research beyond HIV by providing first multiparametric assays to study metabolic processes in small clinical blood samples, attracting collaborators. These methods generate technology-and-knowledge-exchange opportunities, support research at other institutes, and attract commercialization and R&D activities.He is the founder of The International Immunometabolism Network and a member of the Immunometabolism (a new immunometabolism journal) editorial board. He regularly reviews for Nature Medicine, EBiomedicine, Science Translational Medicine, Plos One, Plos Medicine, Frontiers in Immunology, Scientific Reports, AIDS etc.
