I oversaw WCPI’s programs and operations while also working closely with the president and board of directors to guide the organization. Specifically, I provided strategic counsel on programs, including our congressional briefings, events with the Congressional Caucus for Women’s Issues (Women’s Caucus), and our women’s leadership programs.I also provided organizational leadership on internal systems, such as technology, communications, budget, and financial controls. Successes included the implementation of an online application process, improved database management, and updated communications/IT systems. I also managed the recruitment and onboarding of new staff, administer staff benefits, and provide legal review of the WCPI Employee Handbook.I oversaw the publication of the Weekly Legislative Update and am an expert panelist on the role and evolution of the Women’s Caucus and women’s congressional leadership.

I served as a writer and editor-in-chief for The Source. During this time, I also worked with the president to develop and support policy priorities of the Women’s Caucus and was responsible for hosting congressional briefings and events, in conjunction with the Women’s Caucus, on those priorities.I was promoted from Policy Director to become WCPI’s first-ever Vice President.

I represented UNCF in deliberations with Congress, the administration, and the higher education community, resulting in favorable positions within the Higher Education Act for Historically Black Colleges and Universities and low-income students. I also developed and implemented strategies to advance UNCF’s legislative agenda, securing federal appropriations for higher education programs and emergency funds for UNCF member institutions in the wake of hurricanes Katrina and Rita.I provided member presidents and leadership with timely and thorough analysis of the federal budget and appropriations bills, as well as congressional and regulatory actions. I engaged Congress and the administration on issues related to STEM education, campus-based aid, and student financial aid.

I served as the primary staff counsel on education, labor and employment, health, women’s issues the Congressional Black Caucus Task Force on Judicial Nominations, and the District of Columbia College Access Act.I drafted legislation to protect women in state prisons from sexual abuse, lift the federal restriction on the use of local DC tax dollars for abortion services, and combat childhood obesity.Key legislative and regulatory initiatives included the introduction of the No Taxation Without Representation Act of 2001, enactment of the Southeast Federal Center Public-Private Development Act, oversight of the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s HOPE VI grants, and efforts to secure funds for the DC Combined Sewer Overflow system.
