Data Scientist
Student Software Engineer For Principal Financial Group
At this role I was a student contractor for Principal Financial Group working in a team with other University of Michigan students. We took part in the project through the Multidisciplinary Design Program (MDP) at UMich. MDP allows students to take on a role in a project to help learn leadership and professional skills that will carry over into their careers. Through MDP I created and presented numerous Executive Summaries and Design Reviews regarding my project. These assignments helped to teach me how to communicate expectations and deadlines with the sponsor, Principal. Part of these assignments was extensive project planning which required our group to create a project timeline to follow for software development. We held weekly meetings with our sponsor and faculty mentor to go over our progress and ensure that we were developing the project in line with the sponsor's expectations. Our project was to create a web application that Principal employees would use to calculate customer premium quotes for disability insurance. Our app replaces a legacy system at Principal which is time-consuming and inefficient at performing this task. We decided to implement a front end web application on AWS draws customer data from the Principal database and allows the user to edit the most recent "sequence" of information before calculating the results. Part of the backend was coding Python functions in AWS Lambda that used the updated sequence and Principal's insurance rates (hosted on DynamoDB) to calculate a new premium for the customer. Once completed, this information is passed back to the front end to be displayed on the website. While currently not complete, I have learned many new skills while working on this project including a better understanding of how to use AWS as well as an understanding of how to work in a team in a professional setting.
Intern
During my internship at Boston Family Office I created detailed business analysis reports to present to the partners at the firm. I used publicly available data to argue whether or not the company was a good investment option. I also was responsible for refactoring many internal excel documents on accounts held at the company to improve readability and interpretability.
Youth Climbing Coach
In my role as a youth climbing coach I was responsible for creating and executing practices plans and workouts for multiple youth climbing teams. I led workouts and educated the kids on the team about proper technique and load management. Previous to coaching I had been one of the more senior members on the competitive youth climbing. I joined the competitive youth team in the second season after inception and watched the team and program evolve through my time in the program. Because of my seniority the coaches helped to develop me into a coach throughout my time on the youth team by thrusting me into leadership roles during practice. Coaching climbing as a whole has always been an extremely rewarding experience to me as it allows me to instill some of the passion I have for the sport into the kids I coach. Climbing has been an extremely positive impact in my life so it feels good to give back and help introduce others to the sport I love.
Summer Camp Counselor
I've worked this position in 2018, 2019, and 2021 and had a blast each year. I attended this camp growing up and can truly say that it had a huge impact on me and helped to mold the person I am today. It's incredible to have the opportunity to return as a counselor and help maintain the fun and positive atmosphere of the camp. As a counselor, I am in charge of a particular cabin age group with fourteen boys. My role is to manage the kids in my cabin which entails getting to know each kid individually and understanding the dynamics between kids in the cabin. Doing this makes it much easier to manage conflicts when they arise as well as set defined goals and expectations for the cabin group. I also wrote behavioral reviews on the kids in my cabin and communicated with the parents of the kids in my cabins. In my role here I feel I have learned a lot about what leadership means to me and have developed my own leadership style. Another part of my role at camp for all three years was heading the climbing department. In this role I was in charge of managing climbing classes and camper for children aged 8-16 in our camp's climbing barn. I also was in charge of setting routes for campers to climb and managing and expanding our camp's inventory of gear with the goal of making the activity more accessible to all ages. On top of this, I lead outdoor climbing day trips to the nearby climbing spot in Rumney, NH. During these, I set up top ropes for the kids and made sure that they were adhering to the safety protocols for outdoor climbing that I had taught in the barn.
