I most recently worked as a research associate for Dr David France at the University of Glasgow. I worked on using bodipys to visualise anti-worm drugs, in order to investigate drug resistance in nematodes. I designed and synthesised these compounds which are then tested with the help of our collaborators at the University. Prior to this I worked for Prof Richard Hartley also at the University of Glasgow. This work also utilised my skills in synthetic organic chemistry in the field of chemical biology. I synthesised molecular probes for the detection and quantification of gaseous transmitters at various locales within the cell. I previously worked as a post-doctoral researcher at Palacky University, Czech Republic. I used both solid-phase and solution-phase chemistry to produce small target molecules, notably cyclic guanidines, with potential anti-cancer and anti-HIV properties. During this time I spent 3 months working with our collaborators in Argentina at the Univerisdad Nacional de Rosario and 3 months at Jagiellonian University in Krakow.Prior to this I completed my PhD at the University of Birmingham, entitled 'radical mediated reactions of dithiocarbamates'. This work was all solution based, and involved a range of radical reactions (photo and chemical initiated) as well as cross metathesis, ring-closing metathesis and reductive aminations, amongst others. I spent an enjoyable 3 months of my PhD working in the labs at GSK in Stevenage, where I learnt more about the industrial side of research and development chemistry.
