The majority of capital projects exceed initial cost and schedule estimates, often by substantial margins that cause project stakeholders to doubt the initial investment decision. This type of project failure is observed across sectors, industries, and geographies. Why do projects so frequently fail? What can we do to improve project execution to improve capital return on investment and project economics? These are questions I ask myself constantly as a researcher and a consultant. I’m seeking to better understand the nature of uncertainty and risks in capital projects to develop better methods for planning and executing projects for improved predictability.I devote substantial time and effort to studying and working on capital projects, and I’m always looking for new challenges.
