I provide security consulting services for mid-tier to enterprise companies that are looking help with their security program. Whether it is adopting a cyber security framework, mapping security controls, or looking for technologies to fill gaps in their security posture, I can provide advisory services.

Cedar Rapids, Iowa Area

Responsibilities include: Assessing customer needs and providing security solutions to match those needs. Making architectural recommendations for customer solution deployments. Provide customers an overview on the latest security trends and solutions that are offered. Maintain proficiency on the latest security technologies and threats. Conduct proof of concept implementations. I also review customer deployments and make recommendations for best practices. I instruct customers on how to use, implement, and configure Check Point solutions.

Iowa City, Iowa Area

Responsibilities include assessing and understanding the current network security posture and future architecture, providing recommendations for improvement and risk reduction. I identify and execute on opportunities to automate security controls. I provide consulting as a subject matter expert on, and conduct in-depth security reviews of, network architecture and implementations. I design security configuration guidelines and standards for network devices as well as mechanisms for assessing compliance. I define clear, concise, and executable standards documentation for any implemented solutions for formal operational handoff. I also design and implement network security systems and platforms, including IDS/IPS, NAC, DLP, web filtering.

Iowa City, Iowa Area

Responsibilities include Vulnerability Management, Threat Intelligence, Security Incident Management, Project and Business Consulting, Operational Risk Assessment, and Controls Consolidation. My primary role has been to establish a vulnerability management program. I run vulnerability scans and turn over findings for remediation by the technology service owners. I provided remediation consulting services upon request to ensure gaps are mitigated. I have secondary responsibilities in putting infrastructure in place to feed data into a Security Operations Center.

Iowa City, Iowa Area

Primary responsibility is network security. I manage firewalls and security appliances for the enterprise. I have a secondary responsibility of managing the infrastructure for the Pearson DLP deployment and Websense content filtering. My current role also requires me to work on projects that will require network security representation such as new acquisitions of companies into Pearson, migration of server environments, network architecture changes, and new business offerings. The technologies I manage include Checkpoint Secure Gateways, Checkpoint Provider 1/Multi-Domain Server, Checkpoint Multi-Domain Log Management, Cisco ASA, Fortinet Fortigate, Websense Web Security, and Symantec Data Loss Prevention.

Primary responsibility is Data Loss Prevention (DLP). In my role I manage Symantec’s Vontu DLP product. I write policies, tune policies, deploy endpoint rules, and manage the Vontu components for network discovery, network monitoring, and endpoint. Creating processes for DLP and managing relationships with support teams falls under my responsibility. My secondary responsibility is an ISO 27K implementer working with Pearson business units in establishing their ISO 27K certification.

Primary responsibility is management of Intrusion Detection/Prevention infrastructure (IDS/IPS), event correlation, and incident handling. Former responsibilities included vulnerability assessment of AEGON corporate network and assets. Use network based scanning solutions to find rogue devices, network vulnerabilities, and asset specific vulnerabilities. Work with asset owners on recommended remediation of vulnerabilities found. Administer and maintain vulnerability scanning servers and applications. Secondary responsibilities include working with rest of security team on process to evaluate impact of newly released vulnerabilities and exploits on the AEGON environment. Tertiary responsibilities of computer forensics.

Work on the Network Technical Center (NTC) team located in the AEGON Data Center. Job duties include monitoring data circuits for outages and working with vendors to resolve them. Monitor and troubleshooting LAN/WAN equipment for failures. Troubleshoot problems with routing or high circuit utilization. Monitor and troubleshoot mainframe VTAM connections. Created and monitored monthly external vulnerability scans to test network security. Test and troubleshoot BRI backup circuits on a monthly basis. Track down virus traffic and disable offending hosts. Perform minor network changes requested by AEGON business units. Create and apply ACL’s to standardize routers. Worked on migration of Checkpoint firewalls to PIX. Verify and troubleshoot firewall rules. Troubleshoot dialup and VPN connections for corporate users.

Work in NDO (network distributed operations) at main computer center. Duties include monitoring Unix and Windows NT servers with utilities such as HP Openview, Compaq Insight Manager, and IP Sentry. Troubleshoot applications and services that run on the servers. Monitor communication and data circuits. Perform intrusive testing to data and voice circuits by routing (looping) them through a Fireberd bit/block reader test unit. Install and de-install physical connections for data circuits including v.35 and serial connections. Troubleshoot OCM and TMS multiplexers. Work with local, regional, and international telco’s to resolve circuit problems. Exposed to point to point ISDN and frame relay circuits. Telnet into Cisco routers to perform routine maintenance on interfaces.

Worked independently with no supervision and on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.. Duties included the installation and setup of Cisco routers, switches, server environment (NT domains), and workstations. Assisted in the installation and programming of all the CCT’s (Call Control Tables) for the Aspect Communications telecom switch. Maintain the telecom switch on a day-to-day basis. Swap out daily back-up tapes according to schedule. Maintain John Deere project technician workstations including software image and network connectivity. Administrator for building security system swipe card access.

Launched Project from September 1998 – November 1998. Moved to Iowa to assist in move of help desk from Southfield MI to Davenport. Started as level 2 technician and was promoted to Team Leader on project. Duties included monitoring project service levels and technician performance using daily statistics. Worked as a Senior Technician providing level 2 support for those on the help desk. Generated flow procedures following ISO 9001 standards. Developed and maintained schedules to account for call arrival patterns. Maintained internal network and workstations.

Job entailed troubleshooting network login problems with Novell Netware and Windows NT, configuring network properties and IP settings, resolving network print problems, and troubleshooting software issues.
