I taught at an independent high school in San Francisco as a faculty member in our Human Development Department (HD). This academic department launched in 2014, offering an integrated curriculum of College Counseling, Community Engagement, Cultural Competency, Health & Wellness, and Learning & Meta-cognition. Before becoming the Director of Community Engagement I was an Instructor in the HD Department in its first three years. The Community Engagement program at UHS is designed to support students as they prepare for, engage in, and reflect on their volunteer work in the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond. I designed curriculum, taught classes, and worked directly with students to help them connect with meaningful volunteer opportunities. A core part of my work was establishing and developing relationships with the non-profit organizations that provide service-learning and volunteering opportunities for youth.In my role as a Mentor at UHS, I provided academic advising and all-around support to a group of fifteen students over the course of their four years at the school.

TRAININGBefore beginning my work as volunteer, I completed a 3-month in-country Pre-Service Training (PST) in the capital city of Praia on the island of Santiago.PRIMARY PROJECTI was assigned to work at the Centro de Juventude São Vicente (CEJ-JV) in the city of Mindelo. My primary responsibilities were to teach classes, facilitate workshops, and support the teen and young adult leaders at the center. I reported to the Coordinators and Psychologist of the CEJ and worked in the regional coordinator of the National Volunteer Program (PNV/UN Volunteers).The "CEJ" is part of network of centers throughout the country operated by the Ministério de Juventude (Ministry of Youth). The centers serve Cape Verdeans aged 18-35, offering professional training classes, enrichment programs, academic support, counseling, and outreach activities for the surrounding communities.An important part of the work at the CEJ is helping young community members develop their ability to earn a living. This involves teaching/co-teaching classes and working in one-on-one settings with aspiring entrepreneurs to help them develop business & project plans. Projects that I supported involved artisan furniture, culinary arts, graphic design, a fish exporting business, and the launch of a local non-profit youth center. SECONDARY PROJECTWhile living in Mindelo I worked with two soccer clubs as a youth coach. - Worked with the Director to manage a department of 30+ employees offering youth programs for over 1,000 children (Lil' Kickers Child Development soccer classes, camps, birthday parties, childcare, KidsFest).- Responsibilities included training, hiring & firing, coaching, sales, customer service, event planning and marketing.

Founded and operated a small business in the music and entertainment industry. Our mission was "to empower the Hip Hop community through education entrepreneurship"- Planned, promoted and executed over 300 events, including small and large concerts, arts festivals and conventions.- Managed marketing accounts for independent and corporate clients, including musicians, record labels, film studios and clothing lines.- Assembled and managed a nationwide marketing team with over 50 on-campus college representatives.- Built a music distribution channel with over 100 brick-and-mortal and online retailers worldwide.- Provided project management support to independent artists and entrepreneurs for album production, releases and marketing campaigns.- Operated a recording studio serving independent artists.- Managed a booking referral service for DJs, musicians and event promoters.
