I have been known as Coach MD since 2011. This designation arises from what I have learned in my over 30 years of practice as a medical doctor. Specifically, that many, if not most, problems people go to the doctor to solve actually stem from the challenges of daily life. Instead of giving a pill to try and make them go away, my mission is to help people get to the core of their challenges whether they be physical or emotional so that they can achieve total wellness—having more control over life than they ever thought was possible. First, as a partner at Associates in Internal Medicine, then as owner of The NY Center for Longevity & Wellness, I was always on the lookout for anything that could benefit my patients, from the field of practical life extension to positive psychology and everything in between. I helped guide my patients so that they could achieve optimal health in all areas - body, mind, and spirit. It was and still is my contention that the challenges of daily life impact our health in ways that are generally ignored but should be addressed when delivering medical guidance.My role and responsibility is to sift through both the scientific and lay press to come up with recommendations that best serve those persons who seek my guidance. Therefore, I brought a critical eye to any mainstream recommendations that didn't intuitively make sense to me. For example, aggressive blood pressure-lowering guidelines have now been shown to cause more harm, increasing the chance of trauma due to falls and other morbidities. The use of proton pump inhibitors to treat GERD and other conditions has been shown to increase many serious conditions and, most recently, has been shown to increase complications while using them on hospitalized patients on ventilators.
