I fell in love with the game of basketball at three years old and grew up playing in every league and playground in Baltimore, MD as a child. My dream was to play in the NBA yet I have always gravitated to leadership positions on almost every team I have been a part of which led to mentorship and coaching. My first shot at coaching came at my undergraduate alma mater, Morgan State University as a Graduate Assistant. I just finished a playing career that began with me as a walk-on, on a last placed team, to me being named second team all MEAC as a Senior and us finishing third in the league. I was eager to start my professional career as a coach. After the first year as graduate assistant, I was hired full time and had the privilege to be a part of two regular and a post season MEAC Championship as well as an NCAA and NIT tournament appearance. All firsts in Morgan history. After leaving Morgan I decided to take on the challenge of creating a basketball program at my high school alma mater, The Baltimore Polytechnic Institute. Poly was always known for its academic success as well as its football team but the Boys Basketball Team had never been to a city championship in its 125+ year history. In the ten years since taking over a program who went 4-19 the previous season, we have won three city, five regional, and three consecutive state championships. We were 24-2 this past season when Covid-19 cut our season short in the state final 4. We finished #19 in the country in ESPN ‘s final poll.My highest personal achievements have been being named all Metro or Maryland State Coach of the year 3 times and being selected as a court coach with USA Basketball. Our formula was to model a family structure with the coaching and support staff and take a holistic approach to supporting our student athletes. We offer every aspect of support they need for success with year round academic tutoring, professional strength and conditioning, mental and physical health experts on staff, and a nutrition plan for each member). Even more important than our championships has been our accomplishments getting young people in school for free. We have had 13 scholarship players in our ten years and have maintained a team GPA of over 3.0 for the last five. This coming after taking over a program that had a sub 2.0 gpa in our first year and no division 1 scholarship direct qualifiers in the previous 20. My mission moving forward is to help build young people in Baltimore City into productive citizens in a positive way through education and coaching the game I love.
