“I can find you another two yards.” It’s a line from a movie classic, Chariots of Fire, chronicling the story of British athletes Harold Abrahams and Eric Liddell as they prepare for the 1924 Olympics. Abrahams had been beaten by Liddell, and, taking the loss badly, did the unheard of for that time—he hired a professional coach. The coach quickly saw tweaks that would lead to Abrahams winning gold—the extra “two yards.”As a coach/coach-trainer, I work with smart leaders who want the “extra” that will help them “win”—whether that means a leadership win that means more impact, a coaching win that means more success for clients, or a personal win that means more ease, freedom, and fulfillment.My own career path is somewhat curvy: I started as a music therapist working in psych wards, but became an accidental entrepreneur in my mid-20s when I opened a resume service and discovered a talent for writing—not just resumes, but books (eventually penning 8—30-Day Job Promotion; Decisions, Decisions for MBAs; Resume Magic). I heard about “coaching” in the late 90s so took an ICF-accredited course and was hooked. There was no career coaching program at the time, so I launched The Academies (formerly Leadership Coach Academy & Career Coach Academy).Since 2001, we've coached and mentored thousands from 6 continents—executives and high-potentials, new and experienced coaches, HR/OD leaders—in a variety of settings (executives and internal coaches in global corporations, executive MBA career coaches in prestigious business schools, independent entrepreneurs).
