I have over a decade of experience working in the tourism industry in Alaska and Hawaii. Much of my time with guests I find myself answering questions and providing local knowledge. I also extensively travel on my time off, getting to do the asking myself. These questions always revolve around a similar theme: the quest for authentic food and other local connections. As of now, tourists must wade through a variety of sources and platforms and many of these show out of date or incorrect information. On the flip side of the same coin, small food vendors are at a loss as to how to efficiently market themselves. As a new age solution I am creating Coconut Wireless, a map-based mobile app that will provide a centralized, interactive platform on which all local food vendors can advertise and users will be able to easily see what is available around them. Coconut Wireless will promote sustainable tourism through bridging the gap between tourists and the local foods and connections they seek and will help foster economic prosperity for the state of Hawaii.
