I completed the Higher Heights Communications Internship after my sophomore year of college in 2019. Right after the pandemic hit in April of 2020, I was asked to come back part time as a Communications Associate. The summer I was hired, Higher Heights experienced extreme growth after the racial reckoning and murder of George Floyd. At that time, my supervisor, Aprill Turner, became even busier than she already was, and as a result, I was running most of the social media. They selected all the content, and I would turn into posts, graphics, and tweet threads. As a neuroscience major, most of this was new to me but I knew until Higher Heights hired more staff, I needed to do this and use this moment to help grow our organization and create more systematic change. I worked closely with the women who ran The Sip Hour, a weekly web series on facebook live. I designed the graphics and promotional posts. We had guests including Jemele Hill, Senator Elizabeth Warren, Vice President Kamala Harris when she was a senator. I always felt like it was a privilege to work at Higher Heights especially as a white person. I have never forgotten that or taken that for granted. I have learned so much about bridge building, fighting oppression through protest and elections, and how to uplift others. These are skills I will continue building upon for the rest of my life.

I completed the Gap Year Program at Virginia Eye Consultants (VEC). I began working at VEC in June 2021 as an ophthalmic technician. I began working in the Norfolk location learning a multitude of diagnostic tests. VEC has oculoplastic, glaucoma, retina and cornea subspecialists. I learned how to conduct different tests and workups for all subspecialities. I worked independently with patients to complete examinations and testing. After working as a technician, I began scribing for optometrists and ophthalmologists. In this capacity, I handle consents for procedures, send all prescriptions, record all exam findings and the assessment and plan. I also ensure all testing imaging, and lab results are in the chart.Additionally, I worked on clinical research with Dr. Albert Cheung, cornea specialist. His research focused on determining if there is a difference in surgical outcomes between patients who use brand eye drops or generic eye drops post operatively. I worked by going through medical records and tracking indictors of surgical outcome including intraocular pressure, corneal edema, and best corrected vision.

I work with physicians at Sentara Williamsburg's Emergency Room to record their notes and information about patient care and procedures conducted in the Emergency Room.

I write weekly articles for College Magazine on topics relevant to college students including mental health and gender issues. I also serve on the 50 by 2050 committee, which supports women running for office and encourages more women to run.

Utica, New York Area

Higher heights is the only organization exclusively devoted to increasing the amount of black women voters through their black women vote campaign, increasing the number of black women in office at the local, state and national levels, and conducting political research related to voting and representation I am working with the Digital Director of Higher Heights to update the website by altering the content and adding new web features, while supporting the office staff on ongoing projects.

Greater San Diego Area

I worked under Dr. Giorgio Quer on his unpublished research on using heart rate variation to track the menstrual cycle. I used Jupyter Hub, pandas, numpy, and pyplot to clean and analyze large data sets and continued to learn more features of Python.
