I quite literally help people the land, like the agency moto says.Some days I'm on the 4-wheeler surveying/inventory natural rangeland or pasture land. Then I'll take that info back and make maps and conservation plans to help producers & landowners work smarter, not harder on their land. Making it more productive and sustainable for the soil, biotic integrity, and hydrology, besides being profitable. Other days I help with outreach, and educating the public about conservation and why it's important. I enjoy Every part of what I do and hope to continue learning more in the field of conservation!

• Working with Kindergarden through 5th grade students with extra behavioral or learning guidance. I assist teachers with daily classroom activities, primarily focusing on special needs students, but also aiding the rest of the classroom students. A general schedule was used as a guideline for my daily routine, but would change every day based on what needs were where at. I didn’t work one on one with students most of the time, but when I did, I had to make a fast but genuine connection with the student to build trust. I would visit about 6 different classrooms a day, but estimate about 9 different room changes according to my most recent schedule. Most days were stressful because the students that I came close to would exhibit serious self-doubt and try to shut themselves off from any help, and that is when I would come in and work to calm their insecurities in the most structured caring way possible. Some children were difficult to bond with but very worth it when they would open up to help. When I was unsure of how to handle a situation, I would talk to the classroom teacher, then follow protocol and make a care-call to specials teacher if the situation continued to escalate. Cooperation was key every day with my coworkers and the students in order to keep them on the best educational path. It was difficult at the start to understand the flow as a school staff member, but I persisted and I’ve learned new ways to solve my challenges.

• Data collection was a daily part of duties where my coworkers and I shared responsibility going out to our campus weather station to get the last 24 hours precipitation and high/low/current temperatures data by 7am. It would take 15 minutes to input the data it into CoCoRaHS and Kansas Mesonet website weather pages. Then emails get sent with the info to local news outlets. Routine operations revolved around processing massive volumes of historical weather data that either needed moved, graphed, duplicates deleted, or anomalies verified. Station maintenance around Kansas was attended to at least every spring and fall. One spring break a coworker and I made a venture around the state to assess the western stations all in one trip. Sensors would be rotated out when updates needed to be made and they needed fixed. In my time here, I learned how to make soil probes for temperature data from copper tubing, wiring, resin, and resistors. I’ve taken initiative with organizing office space for optimized work, and have even transferred the paper historical weather records online. I was also in charge of re-certifying TempRH probes that would be put into use at weather station.
