As a Board Certified General Surgeon, Dr. Cody Gunn is primarily focused on breast surgery, breast cancer and diseases of the breast. He has been in practice in Athens since 1988. In October 2022 Dr. Gunn became Program Director of the Comprehensive Breast Health Program in association with University Cancer and Blood Center, the leading oncology and hematology practice for Northeast Georgia. The Program will manage and direct all phases of breast health care from benign breast problems to breast cancer including surgical treatment, medical and radiation oncology, and imaging with 3D mammography and ultrasound. In 2015 Dr Gunn formed the High Risk Breast Cancer Program which was the first program like it in Northeast Georgia. The program combines advanced technology with expert clinical assessment to determine a woman’s lifetime risk for breast cancer. Women with an elevated lifetime risk of breast cancer may qualify for more intense screening including 3D mammogram and breast MRI as desired. Additional care includes genetic counseling and testing as indicated,and risk reducing strategies. Dr. Gunn chaired the Athens Regional Medical Center (now Piedmont Athens) Breast Center Committee from its inception in 2001 to present. Dr. Gunn served as chairman of the hospital Surgical Case Review Committee from 2002-2012 and was then appointed as chairman of the Medical Staff Quality Committee in 2013. In his role as chairman of the Medical Staff Quality Committee, Dr. Gunn reviewed medical and surgical quality metrics with ongoing physician practice evaluations, as well as all medical and surgical peer review cases for active staff physicians at Piedmont Athens Regional for 20 years.
