Being a nurse is everything they said it would be. It is demanding, often thankless, and frustrating. The 12 hour shifts can feel like a lifetime. The work is just as tough mentally as it is physically. Sometimes leaving the hospital can be as hard as waking up in the morning. Why did I choose this profession? Because I love helping people.In 2015 I graduated WKU with a bachelor's degree in Biology and a Chemistry minor. I decided to use this knowledge in a meaningful way at the University of Louisville's Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics PhD program. My goal was to research ways to treat cancer. I quickly found that this wasn't for me. I wanted to help people in a more hands-on way.Fast forward to 2019 and I found my calling. I had finally graduated nursing school and loved every second of it. Transitioning to direct patient care was more difficult than I could ever imagine, but never shook my resolve. With every passing month, making the lives of my patients better only became more and more fulfilling. Whether I was doing wound care or starting an IV, I always sought to bring a smile to my patients', their family, and my coworkers' faces. I know now that this is who I am. Being a nurse is everything they said it would be, and that is what makes it so rewarding.
