SDL Government is a technology and services company that provides language translation and strategic communication solutions for Government organizations.I worked from Los Angeles to bring machine translation and software development knowledge from my background with Language Weaver, SDL LA Research, and SDL Language Technolgies into the Virginia-based effort. I worked hands on as a member of the engineering team to develop our platform using the Typesafe Play stack, Akka clustering, Cassandra and ElasticSearch datastores to provide a highly scalable, on-premise and cloud-friendly solution for access to machine translation. Their web application and REST API built on top of Language Weaver Machine Translation provide multilingual web browse capability, instant language identification and translation of typed text, document storage and translation, user management, and domain customization via use of statistical machine translation and user dictionaries.

SDL acquired Language Weaver in late 2010. SDL has a strong Language Technologies division which is one of several components of their overall Customer Experience management software.My role within SDL Language Technologies as development manager primarily involved leading teams of developers on a variety of projects. Our focus was on the Language Weaver Machine Translation Core Applications, which includes the servers and APIs that wrap our translation and language pair customization engines. Our portfolio also included the hosted web service offering, BeGlobal, as well as continued contract and research work for the US Government.

Language Weaver was a startup providing statistical machine translation systems and services to government and commercial clients. It was acquired by SDL in 2010. As a member of the engineering team, I developed cross-platform server processes, APIs (REST, SOAP, C++ header/library), and UIs to access the MT systems.My position grew over time through promotion to Sr. Engineer and on to Manager as our company grew. My contributions extended as well to our cloud infrastructure and service layers as we took our REST APIs online for public consumption. Through this experience I gained deep knowledge of our VMWare and NetApp-based infrastructure in addition to furthering my knowledge of SQL (MySQL, Postgres, MS-SQL, Oracle) and web application architectures (Tomcat, Grails, Ruby-on-Rails, PHP).Further, I initially contributed directly and continued to lead engineers involved in the implementation of our hadoop-based collection and large scale data processing algorithms.In the management capacity, I also worked directly on our recruiting, conducting over the years hundreds of phone screens and interviews, leading dozens of in-person interviews, and bringing around 20 engineers to successful offers from our Director of Engineering to join either my own team or related teams in IT, Services, Science, and Data Engineering.I worked on projects that included as well many engineers from the Cluj, Romania office, where about 50 software developers worked at the time of the SDL acquisition.

Evolution Robotics, one of the startups from within Idealabs, provided a robot construction kit utilizing advanced object recognition and path finding algorithms. As a member of the dev team, I implemented C++ libraries and assisted in planning and execution of release processes and continuous integration systems for the software interfaces to the sensors, cameras, and controllers of the kit.

Designed and implemented API and UI software for RAID Enclosure and Controller interfaces.Transitioned there after working on a couple of Print Division projects, re-entering engineering from brief consulting work to relocate and remain with IBM/Tivoli initially.Moved on from IBM after relocation to Los Angeles and subsequent sell of Mylex to LSI by IBM.

First job after bachelor's degree, working on the Tivoli Systems software. Gained deep knowledge of CORBA and implementation in C and C++ on platforms spanning MS, Netware, AIX, HP-UX, Solaris, SunOS, and early Linux distros. Worked with large Perl suites for build and test frameworks along with the direct implementation in C++ primarily focused on the cross-platform user management applications.
