A deck of cards. Simple in context, yet complex when dealt. Such is art, such is life. I was dealt the most difficult hand at the mere age of 6 months old. Being wheelchair bound, I have learned that to find happiness is to accept yourself for who you are. With such a past comes an emotional roller coaster, uphill battles, and a new perspective on life as a whole. As a result my artwork often reflects the emotions that often immerse us. It grasps a glimpse of what I have become both as a person and an artist. In my opinion, combining feelings and thought create the most impactful pieces of work. I do not focus on the type of material I use in a sense of what I like to use. On the contrary, I choose to use the material best suited to further enhance the theme or tone of the piece itself. Certain materials carry their own emotional weight. The same thought process is used for choice of color. A high contrast level may be used for emphasis, where as a monotone palate may be used as a calm, quiet quality. For instance, in a comparison between night and day, a simple, yet effective, black and white contrast is used representing polar opposites. The brightness of the day, the emptiness of the night. Growing up with a disability has provided inspiration unlike any other experience imaginable. Such a journey requires self-acceptance and hope. Such a journey leads to curiosity and adaptability. All of these themes are reflected in my artwork. I strive to bring this different perspective of life onto a scenery in which common people can relate. Where, perhaps it makes them question their own way of living. How you overcome the turbulent occurrences in life define the person you become. Stories can be found in the simplest of sceneries. They are, more often than not, unexpected and grandiose. That is what makes them great. They are all different and are entirely your own to create.
