Conduct research focused on food web interactions in the context of recovery of endangered and threatened salmonids in the Pacific Northwest. Research projects have included 1) determining the importance of biotic and abiotic features of salmonid habitat: implications for juvenile Chinook and steelhead growth and survival (Salmon River, ID), 2) monitoring spatial and temporal patterns in periphyton and benthic invertebrate assemblages, and fish diets pre and post-dam removal (Elwha River, WA), and 3) determining the efficacy of using Engineered Log Jams (ELJs) as a restoration tool for increasing primary and secondary productivity in large impacted rivers (Elwha and Stillaguamish Rivers, WA). Work has focused on 1) development of field and lab methods for monitoring programs, 2) management of field teams and lab operations, 3) submitting permit requests including ESA Section 10(a)(1)(A) - Pacific Fish, US Fish and Wildlife Section 7 Consultation for Bull Trout, US Forest Service Special Use permits and Programmatic Biological Assessments, and Idaho Fish and Game Scientific Collection permits, 4) collaborating with state and federal agencies, and tribal entities, and 5) data management, analysis and manuscript publication.

Analyzed benthic invertebrate data to link forest harvest and landscape factors to benthic macroinvertebrate communities in the interior of British Columbia.

Represented Point of Contact for logistical support for research conducted at Palmer Station, Antarctica. Duties also included ordering research supplies, including chemicals, maintaining chemical inventories and hazardous waste disposal and treatment.

Assessed the feasibility of using stable isotope analysis to analyze food web interactions within the Thames River. Submitted report to the National Rivers Authority, Thames Region. Assisted Queen Mary and Westfield College graduate students in ecological field research.

Palmer Station, Antarctica

Conducted lab and field work for the Palmer Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) program at Palmer Station, Antarctica. Duties included operating CTDs (Conductivity, Temperature, Depth) and OFFIs (Optical Free Falling Instrument), and running Biosonics acoustical transects to locate krill. In the lab, duties included sorting, measuring and conducting growth experiments on krill, as well as coordinating laboratory activities, and data management and analysis. Spare time was spent tagging Adelie penguin pairs, and counting eggs and chicks for Adelies and South Polar skuas.

Sierra Nevada Aquatic Research Laboratory (Snarl), Ca, Usa

Conducted field research at the Sierra Nevada Aquatic Research Laboratory (SNARL). Duties included electrofishing brown and rainbow trout, collecting macroinvertebrates, conducting and managing 24-hour visual surveys and 3-day diel drift studies.

Rvib Nathaniel B. Palmer, Antarctica

Participated in a cruise aboard the RVIB Nathaniel B. Palmer, Antarctica. Duties included deploying plankton and mid-water trawl nets for krill collection, and sorting, measuring and conducting growth experiments on krill.
