Interests:• The contact system and plasminogen activation• Angioedema & Kinin-related inflammatory conditions• Autoimmune microangiopathy• Thrombosis & Bleeding disordersWith the help of talented PhD students, postdocs, guest researchers and undergraduate students, we are trying to understand how the contact system contributes to coagulation and inflammation. Hereto, we are building new bioassays to determine the activation of the involved factors in patient materials and perform mutagenesis studies to decipher pathological mechanisms.Furthermore, we are addressing the role of urokinase-driven plasminogen activation during vascular occlusions, with the aim of offering a new therapy for TTP. In satellite projects, we are studying the mechanisms by which megakaryocytes, the stem cells of blood platelets, take up Factor V and other proteins from the blood stream and are investigating endocannabinoid receptor signaling in platelets. In brief, we are having fun.

I am currently working on the biochemistry of the intrinsic pathway of blood coagulation. This mechanism has two sides: it is involved in the clotting of blood, but at the same time, it governs a potent inflammatory system. I am interested in the separation and overlap of these two routes in health and disease.

I did my promotion here! Enjoyed it very much and learned a lot about science, the business of science, people and myself.

Before I became a PhD. student, I was contracted temporarily to aid in the initial startup phase of the company that is currently known as Crossbeta Biosciences.I wrote a report on the outlook of a startup biotech company that wants to improve the quality of biopharmaceutical products. I also performed research that stands on the basis of a number of patents that are owned by the holding of Utrecht University, the laboratory of Clinical Chemistry and Haematology, as well as the aforementioned company.
